  • Picklefork Kneeboard c1972

A Mike Murphy screenshot from vintage film of a speed run.
This board was built to catch air and “float” above the water.
More info and a film soon as I talk to Mike above this crazy ride!

Preproduction shots for our upcoming towed-watersports documentary…

  • Really Big Shoe

The giant Rainbow Sandal was my last ride at the #CaliforniaSkier50for50 , but it was not mine. So I bought one on eBay, and had fun yesterday figuring out a new way to get up on it. The start is dialed in, and now it’s time to find out what this shoe can do!

I weigh about 210 pounds and with a shoe size of only 10.5, it is a big disatvantage for barefooting. When the boat only goes 39-40, the water breaks super far forward on my feet and it’s walls and walls of water!

  • On the Table

All picnic tables are not created equal, as I learned at the MasterCraft 40-40-400 in 2004. This one was very heavy with the benches built in. There was also extreme drag because the of the considerable spaces between the tabletop piece. The solid table top is the way to go for tricks!

  • Wake-Skate-Board

My best moves on this longboard are a beach start and 180s. For someone who is a better skater it is surly possible to do a towed dock start into a 180 kick flip start. GOALS…

Thanks for the board: @islandski

  • Ride the Rainbow (sandal)

The last ride from my 50 for 50! It was something new to me and took about 10 minutes to figure out! Good times with good friends.

I am currently gathering video and images for the upcoming documentary of my family’s life in towed watersports! Looking forward to the edit with @marcus_brown_

Parker Strip of the Colorado River, 1988

In 1988 Klarich surf photographer Rick Doyle. He adapted his surf gear for some of the first helmet cam shots in water skiing (16 years before the first GoPro was sold). This rig was a genuine Chargers helmet with about 15 pounds of camera gear mounted inside 2 counter-balanced water housings. Doyle used a remote from the boat to take each shot, a roll of 36 before the whole thing had to be taken apart bolt by bolt and reloaded with film.

This style of shot was brand new in skiing and the resulting pics garnered 2 covers, numerous full-page ads, and a feature story in Photographic magazine.
